Will Windsor Terrace Be Without A Grocery Store?

A message from City Councilmember Brad Lander:

One week ago, Windsor Terrace residents came out in droves to a community meeting to speak out against the loss of the neighborhood’s only supermarket, Key Food, which closed its doors for the last time this week.

Together, we made clear to Walgreens – which is planning to replace the Key Food – that Windsor Terrace needs a full grocery store on the site, with affordable, fresh, high-quality food that meets the needs of the whole community. Traveling long distances for groceries is simply not an option for many in our neighborhood.

I want to let you know about a few ways that we are working to make our voices heard:

  • On Thursday, June 28 at 7 PM, the Windsor Terrace Alliance, KWT Neighbors listserv, and local elected officials are hosting a rally at the Key Food site to demand that a supermarket return to that location. For questions, or to help organize your neighbors, please email [email protected].
  • Community members have also been collecting signatures, online and in-person, to petition Walgreens to reconsider their decision to replace the supermarket. You can view the online petition here. As of now, the petition has nearly 1,000 signatures.
  • In the short term, my office is organizing a Windsor Terrace Community Grocery Carpool. If you need rides to the grocery store, or can offer rides, please …

Since last week’s community meeting, Walgreens’ representatives have not provided our community with answers about the status of their real estate transaction or their willingness to reconsider their options for the Key Food property. Next week, I will be joining community leaders at a meeting with Walgreens’ corporate leadership – along with Borough President Marty Markowitz, Assemblyman Jim Brennan, and Brooklyn Community Board 7 – to ask for answers to our questions, and to continue to make it clear that a full grocery store is absolutely vital to Windsor Terrace.

I will continue to work with you in the days to come and hope to see you at next Thursday’s rally.

Brad
